1938 - 1953
Big Sur State Park
After Camp Wing was abandoned in 1937 Camp Esselen was constructed in another part
of Big Sur Start Park and occupied during summer months.
Program handicaps, proximity to civilization, and conflicts of jurisdiction, forced
council to request State of California to make reimbursement of the council's $8,000 investment in Camp Esselen, which was
done in August of 1945.
Camp Esselen continued to be used from 1946 to 1953 for three to four weeks during
summer months until the opening of Camp Pico Blanco in 1954.
